HSK News

About HSK News

HSK News publishes short Chinese news articles written for people learning Mandarin. It is inspired by NHK News Web Easy, which does the same for learners of Japanese: real news, retold in simpler language, with reading help built into the page.

One article a day, graded by HSK level

Every article is written for one level of HSK 3.0, the current Chinese proficiency standard, which runs from level 1 to level 9:

  • Beginner — HSK 1–3
  • Intermediate — HSK 4–6
  • Advanced — HSK 7–9

Use the level buttons on the home page to see only the articles at your level.

How articles are made

Each article is written by Claude, an AI model, which reads reporting on a story from several news sources and writes a new, shorter article at the target level. It is not a translation or a copy of any one source. The sources are listed at the bottom of every article.

Reading aids

  • Pinyin appears above every character. Turn it off to test yourself.
  • Name colours mark names of people (orange), places (brown), and organisations (blue), so you can tell names apart from ordinary words.
